LONG LIFE EMPOWERMENT OF AMITAYUS

Amitayus, Immaculate Life, is one of the Three Long Life Deities known in Tibetan tantric Buddhism as tse-lha nam-sum.  The three deities are Amitayus (Tse-pag-me), Tara (Drol-kar), and Ushnishavijaya (Tsug-tor Nam-gyal-ma).   Great masters who hold the unbroken lineages of the teachings and practices confer long life empowerments to impart blessings and powers of longevity on those who receive them.

Attainment of a precious human rebirth with the ten endowments and eight leisures is a very special opportunity to develop spiritual attainments, and also to provide service for the well being of countless others.  Along with maintaining a healthy life style and benevolent attitudes, long life empowerments such as this play an important role in making this precious human life more meaningful, with a special purpose.  Therefore, we are very fortunate to receive the blessings of the unbroken lineage of the Long Life Empowerment of Amitayus from the Glorious Kyabgon Gongma Rinpoche, on the occasion of His first visit to Madison at the invitation of the Wisconsin Tibetan Association.

INTRODUCTORY TEACHING OF LAM-DRE (PATH AND RESULT)

The Lam Dre, or Path and Result, is the most sacred teaching cycle of the Sakya Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.  The Lam Dre is based on the Hevajra Tantra, and is a unique integration of philosophical explanation and meditation practice.  It originated in the ninth century in ancient India with the scholar and Mahasiddha Virupa, who was an abbot at Nalanda University.  The teachings which Virupa bestowed to his disciples were then transmitted to Tibet four generations later, and became known as the Lam Dre.  It was Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, the first of the five founders of the Sakya Tradition, who received and mastered these teachings.

The Wisconsin Tibetan Association is delighted to provide the opportunity to receive this precious teaching directly from the Glorious 41st Patriarch of Sakya Dolma Phodrang, Jetsun Ngawang Kunga Thegchen Palbar.  Earlier this Summer, Kyabgon Gongma Rinpoche gave an extensive teaching on Lam Dre teachings at Tsechen Kunkhyab Ling, the North American seat of  Sakya Dolma Phodrang in Walden, New York.

Early Indian and Tibetan Lam Dre lineage are as follows:

Virupa
Krishnapa and Dombipa
Damarupa
Avadhutipa
Gayadhara (994–1043)
Drogmi Lotsaba (992–1074)
Khon Konchog Gyalpo (1034–1102) (tantra)

Zhangton Chobar (1053–1156) (pith)
Sachen Kunga Nyingpo (1092–1158)
Sonam Tsemo (1142–1182)
Jetsun Dakpa Gyaltsen (1147–1216)
Sakya Pandita Kunga Gyeltsen (1182–1251)
Drogon Chogyal Phagpa (1235–1280)
